CHIBOUGAMAU, EEYOU ISTCHEE (March 21, 2024) - The Eeyou Istchee Sports and Recreation Association (EISRA) and its partners, the Cree Nation Government, Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay, Cree Nation Youth Council, Cree Native Arts and Crafts Association, Cree School Board, and the Cree Nation of Mistissini are pleased to announce the return of the Eeyou Istchee Summer Games scheduled for July 14 to 21, 2024. Hosted by the community of Mistissini, this regional multi-sport competition event for youth between 9 to 18 years old promises to be an exciting comeback of the summer games last held in 2011. Athletes can expect track and field athletics, individual and team events, aquatics as well as a lineup of traditional Cree sports and cultural celebrations.
The association has mandated a steering committee comprised of representatives from the EISRA and its partners, as well as a local committee. At work for several months now, the steering committee recognizes the potential for gathering athletes and supporters from Eeyou Istchee as part of a longer-term objective of promoting active living and healthy lifestyles amongst Cree youth. Charles J. Hester, Chairperson of EISRA and Co-Chair of the EISG has long seen the value of youth participating in sports and emphasizes the importance of the communities’ support towards the success of the summer games.
“Community support is directly responsible for the success of any sporting event. We expect to see the same enthusiastic support and applause that our communities are known for. It energizes both the athletes and the spectators.” – Charles J. Hester
The steering committee is actively pursuing financial sponsors to contribute towards the $1.5 million budget required to cover expenses related to equipment, transportation, lodging, and so on. Organizers are also looking to secure block funding for the future, which would make regular events possible.
Just as important to the steering committee is the opportunity for youth to develop their self-esteem, confidence, and feelings of belonging within the athletic community. Adrian N. Gunner, Youth Grand Chief and Co-Chair of the EISG can attest to the impact sharing in such events had on him as a youth athlete and is confident today’s youth will have the same experience at this year’s summer games.
“Sports and culture can be powerful paths to healing for our youth. The sense of pride you earn as a participating athlete is something that sticks with you and can positively shape the person you become.” – Youth Grand Chief Adrian N. Gunner
The inclusion of traditional sports will be yet another way of achieving this. Events such as the portage and canoe racing will be featured alongside the usual athletic competitions.
Collaboration with Cree Native Arts and Crafts Association (CNACA)
The Eeyou Istchee Summer Games will also be an occasion to celebrate our culture by connecting multiple generations and nurturing the exchange between our youth, adults, and elders. Programming and activities are currently in development by the team at CNACA and are expected to include storytelling, music and entertainment, traditional drumming, and a showcase of Cree arts and crafts.
