Spotlight on Cree Athletes: Eeyou Istchee Summer Games Video Series Highlights Inspiring Stories

The Eeyou Istchee Summer Games is a chance for Cree youth to dream big, build their confidence, and make their mark on our strong athletic tradition. A new video series, released by the Eeyou Istchee Sports and Recreation Association as part of their promotions for the Games, is inspiring youth to do exactly that.

The sneak preview video, released on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, features three athletes from the host community of Mistissini: Abighail Petawabano, Miranda Blacksmith, and Israel Mianscum. In the video, the athletes showcase their skills as they share some of their experiences and hopes for the games.

"That sense of community and shared experiences, that's what get me going," says Miranda Blacksmith, a legendary runner with multiple North American Indigenous Games gold medals to her name.

"My goal is that I could go to the Olympics one day," shares Mistissini Abighail Petawabano, smiling as she trains for the Summer Games.

The video also features hockey player Israel Mianscum, who made headlines as a first-round draft pick in the QMJHL in 2019.

Athlete profile videos will be released every Wednesday on Facebook, Instagram, and on creegames.ca, as we work to inspire and uplift our youth leading up to the games.
